You’ve most likely seen Mr Nunn’s images, and then even perhaps a few words too, plastered in various sections of Wavelength and The Surfer’s Path magazines.

Tim has certainly done the rounds regarding UK surf media, his resume is impressive; six years on the road making and contributing to 14 individual films and documentaries. Sharing office space with various surf publications before becoming staff photographer for Wavelength; he eventually became editor for said publication. Most recently books are where his interest lies, with newest photographic travelogue ‘Numb’ recently published and proving very popular, showing ‘real’ surf media is far from dead.

Nunn’s images however are the real talking point of this instalment to Behind the Glass; his photography is one that demonstrates a brilliant documentary of moments. He photographs as a journalist and an editor; with space and composition utilised thoughtfully in the image. Unlike a lot of surf photographers, Nunn makes sure his images converse and communicate something to the viewer, whether as part of a small series of images for a publication, or just a one off image.

The men behind the glass:

Tim Nunn

What’s impressive is how Nunn almost seems to prefer photographing the cold. Especially with several promotions for Rip Curl and Lunasurf, and trips to countries ranging from Scotland, Canada and Iceland, it’s easy to see where Nunn gets his niche from.

It’s not all icy cold and dark though, Nunn has travelled all over the globe, the monstrous Mexican beach breaks and relaxed mellow waves of California are just two locations he’s photographed, where 6mm steamers aren’t all that necessary.
Nunn’s newest book continues this expression of all things cold as Tim teams up with long-time friend Ian Battrick to travel to the furthest reaches of Scotland, Canada and Norway. We’re all very keen to get our filthy mitts on a copy of Numb and making ourselves a bit more stoked for the last few months of freezing dawnies and 30mph on-shores.
Have a gander over Tim’s website and grab a copy of Numb while you can:
